North Alabama Electric Cooperative (NAEC) provides several rural communities in North Alabama with Internet access. To address this issue, NAEC, as an electric cooperative, decided to extend services to offer broadband internet to close the digital gap and provide rural dwellers with the opportunity to get fast, cheap, and reliable internet connections as urban residents. NAEC has deployed more than 5,000 route miles of fiber optic capable of providing download speeds up to 1 Gbps, thanks to its built-in infrastructure. The packages that they offer for fiber internet also don’t come with any data limits or restrictions and are also symmetric. From their starting speeds of 50 Mbps, NAEC intends to offer adequate bandwidth for people in a household to watch videos, work remotely, conduct video calls, and do many other activities without interference. Apart from fiber internet, NAEC offers access to free public Wi-Fi hotspots at schools, libraries, and other community institutions to support local students and residents in connecting to the Internet. Since it is a member-owned cooperative established to serve 44 counties, NAEC has strived for the advancement of connectivity for schools, businesses, farms, and homes in rural Northern Alabama. It has forged high-speed internet that is affordable and reliable, which has boosted economic growth and improved the standard of living in the region.
