Highland Telephone Cooperative is a telecommunications cooperative that was established to deliver broadband internet services, phone services, and others to the rural population of southern and eastern Kentucky. Established in 1951, Highland has grown over the decades to deliver high-speed Internet connectivity to a lot of those regions that remain unconnected or partially connected. Highland supplies Internet that is fundamentally based on fiber optic and plans are offered with download and upload speeds of up to 1Gbps. This high-speed fiber connection supports high bandwidth requirements such as streaming of HD videos, fast download speed, high-quality video calls, and a reliable gaming and smart home connection. Highland also has plans with smaller speeds such as 25 Mbps for a casual internet consumer. All plans offer unlimited data, no contract sign-up, and no overage charges. Broadband deployment at the community level has long been a major problem, but broadband cooperatives like Highland Telephone have played a crucial role in extending broadband networks to rural Kentucky. Highland has been able to adopt its fiber network through the use of state and federal grants, member funding, and revenue to further enhance and extend its network. As investment is sustained, more residents of Kentucky will enjoy the benefits of efficient and advanced broadband to enhance their living, learning, working, and home experiences.
